I lived with my granny and gradad at 40 Church street

and in the late 1940s when as a baby I won the bonnie

baby contest at Walker Parish Church and my granny won a prize for the hand knitted outfit I was wearing.

my great gran was burried in the Church yard and sadly

so was my granny s son George Oliver who was only 16

years old,I was about 7 years old when George died and

would go to his grave at least once a day with my gran

to make sure his grave was always kept nice ,one day gran got talking to a woman who tended a grave near to

George s and they became friends as the years went on they would look ouut for each other ,then the woman stoped going so for the rest of her life while she was able my granny always kept that grave nice aswell

and put flowers on it she always said that that if it

had been the other way around and she couldnt make it

she felt the woman would have looked after George s

grave for her.I learnt so much from my Granny and as

kids we d often take a short cut through Walker parish church yard and tidy a few graves up on our

way ,as kids we might not have had much but we were taught respect.as kids for one reason or another walker parish church was the heart of walker.I loved

walking through all weathers from Church st to Scrogg

Road. I moved from Walker 40 years ago and live on

the south coast but I do beleave and other Geordies

who I ve meet who have moved south agree ,that when a

Geordie leaves the Northeast the always leave a bit of their heart behind!.
