"Stronger sentences needed for animal abusers"

A review of South Tyneside Magistrates' Court by Julie Sherrard written on Tuesday 28th of February 2012

I was disgusted to hear of the paltry sentence given to Alan Smith who starved his dogs to death. South Tynside Court gave him 17 weeks - is this all a dogs life is worth? This cretin will be allowed out in a few weeks to starve, abuse and neglect animals again. Surely there should be a good deterrent for the ignorant people out there, something to make them stop and think before they decide to treat their 'pets' in this way. Personally I would give them 10 years or more. We have to start treating animals with respect and start giving longer sentences to animal abusers. Thank you
